Selecting an industrial DC motor requires more than comparing a catalogue power rating. The correct decision connects the load, speed range, electrical supply, installation, environment and cooling system. This guide explains IC06 DC motor selection from the engineering and procurement perspective.

Quick Selection Principle

For forced ventilation, start with airflow, pressure, air cleanliness, fan supply and low-speed operation. Do not choose the frame or accept a quotation until the continuous duty point, peak requirement and site constraints have been recorded.

Step 1: Define the Real Duty Point

Power alone is not a complete selection input. Calculate or confirm torque at the required speed and separate continuous duty from temporary overload. State whether the machine starts under load, reverses frequently or spends long periods below base speed.

A motor that looks adequate at rated power can still be unsuitable when the application needs high current at low speed. Conversely, selecting only from the highest peak load can oversize the motor and drive. Provide the load cycle whenever possible.

Step 2: Confirm Speed Range and Control Method

Record minimum operating speed, base speed and maximum mechanical speed. For a DC drive, confirm the intended armature-voltage range and whether field weakening is required above base speed. Feedback accuracy, acceleration time and speed regulation should also be stated.

Low-speed continuous operation deserves special attention because electrical losses remain while shaft-driven ventilation may fall. A separately powered fan or another verified cooling arrangement may be required.

Step 3: Match Enclosure and Cooling

IP and IC codes solve different problems. IP describes protection against access, solids and water; IC describes how heat is removed. A sealed motor is not automatically able to deliver the same output as an open ventilated motor in the same frame.

Ask the manufacturer to confirm the rated output for the specified ambient temperature, altitude, duty and cooling utilities. If ducted air or cooling water is required, put airflow, pressure, inlet temperature, water flow and water quality in the purchase specification.

Step 4: Check Mechanical Interchangeability

For replacement work, compare the complete outline drawing rather than frame number alone. Verify shaft height, shaft extension, keyway, foot-hole pattern, flange, coupling location, terminal-box position and maintenance clearances. Differences can be solved through a custom shaft, adapter base or coupling only after engineering review.

Step 5: Evaluate a Chinese DC Motor Factory

A qualified Chinese DC motor factory should provide project-specific evidence: a datasheet, performance curve, outline drawing, accessory list, routine-test scope and a clear list of customer-supplied utilities. A Chinese electric motor factory should also identify which values are confirmed and which remain subject to design approval.

Avoid comparing quotations only by model name and price. Compare continuous output, duty, enclosure, cooling equipment, bearings, feedback device, terminal box, documentation and included tests on the same basis.

RFQ Checklist

Send the following information to the industrial DC motor manufacturer:

  1. Application and driven equipment.
  2. Continuous power or torque and overload cycle.
  3. Minimum, base and maximum speed.
  4. Armature voltage/current and field supply.
  5. Duty, starts per hour and direction changes.
  6. Mounting, shaft and dimensional drawing.
  7. IP rating, cooling method and available utilities.
  8. Ambient temperature, altitude, dust, water and hazardous-area data.
  9. Encoder, tachogenerator, brakes, heaters and temperature sensors.
  10. Required standards, inspection documents and packing.

Common Mistakes

  • Selecting by kW without checking torque and speed.
  • Treating IP rating as a substitute for a cooling calculation.
  • Omitting minimum continuous speed from a variable-speed enquiry.
  • Assuming the old and new frame codes have identical dimensions.
  • Leaving auxiliary fan, cooling-water and feedback interfaces until installation.
  • Publishing an unverified replacement claim before technical approval.
